#CoronavirusFS: Mboweni ‘must account for all tenders’─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 14:40 Mon, 03 Aug 2020
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni must take responsibility for the wide scale looting of Covid-19 emergency funds by senior ANC figures, and those who are politically connected. This is according to the DA.
The party's calls for Mboweni to take action comes as National Treasury is this week expected to brief the Finance Standing Committee on PPE procurement.
OFM News earlier reported that the presentation set to take place on Wednesday is expected to shed more light on Covid-19 related multimillion rand tenders awarded to ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule's sons, by the Free State Treasury.
The province made national headlines last week, following reports that contracts with a combined value of R2.7 million were awarded to Motheko Projects and Marvel Deeds, owned by Tshepiso Magashule and Thato Magashule respectively. Tshepiso Magashule is reportedly Motheko Projects' sole director, while his younger brother Thato is the director of Marvel Deeds.
The scandal surrounding the awarding of these tenders by the Free State Treasury came just days after President Cyril Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Khusela Diko, took a leave of absence pending investigations into a R125 million PPE contract - allegedly awarded to Royal Bhaca Projects owned by her husband, Thandisizwe Diko.
The DA's Geordin Hill-Lewis in a statement says the time has come for Mboweni to "issue a formal Treasury Instruction that would require the eight Provincial Treasuries which have not done so, to publish all Covid-19 procurement details in full".
Hill-Lewis says Mboweni should go further, and issue a formal Treasury Instruction, in terms of Section 76 of the Public Finance Management Act, requiring them to do so within set time frames.
