During the announcement of the provincial crime statistics yesterday for the 2019/2020 financial year, Saul labelled the Northern Cape as a violent province that needs to be dealt with accordingly.

Although there has been a slight increase in the murder statistics, an issue that Saul says needs to be put under the microscope are crimes committed within families and households.

According to Saul, an increase in murder cases where knives and traditional okapis are used to kill, is of great concern, “Out of the 326 cases of murder, about 162 of them is due to the use of okapis. We want to [urge] our communities to be vigilant at all times, and also collectively with the community, we need to develop a strategy whereby we take violence out of our communities’’.
