The provincial police spokesperson, Mohale Ramatseba, says the arrest came after the police received a tip-off on Tuesday night. He says the police responded and paid a visit to the residence where the sergeant was allegedly holding his wife and daughter hostage.

Ramatseba says with the help of a hostage negotiator’s intervention, the victims were subsequently rescued on Wednesday afternoon. He adds that the suspect’s wife is also a police sergeant at the De Aar SAPS Detectives. A case of kidnapping and assault has been opened. The motive is unknown at this stage and the police are still investigating. The sergeant is expected to appear in the De Aar Magistrate's Court soon.
