This year marks the eighth year since the Marikana massacre where 34 mineworkers were killed during a shootout with the police in the mining town of Brits in the North West.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) is expected to host the Marikana Massacre Memorial Lecture virtually on the association’s Facebook page and other social media platforms on Friday.

Sibanye Still Water is also expected to host a memorial lecture on Friday, to be addressed by the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela.

Amcu’s chairperson, Joseph Mathunjwa, expressed his disappointment that Sibanye Still Water, formerly known as Lonmin Marikana Platinum Mine, is also set to host a similar event parallel to Amcu's event.

Mathunjwa says it is a capitalist hijacking of pain and suffering for Sibanye's personal gain and a public relations exercise. He also says they are disappointed that Madonsela will be participating in Sibanye’s event. He says he expected her to be more sensitive to the issue. He further expressed that Madonsela has never even set her foot on the ‘Kopje’ hills where the mineworkers were camping during the protests in August 2012.

“It is an insult to the economic revolutionary martyrs who died there,” he added.
