#Covid19: NC to appear before Cogta committee─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 16:12 Mon, 17 Aug 2020
The Northern Cape will this week come under scrutiny when its government is set to brief parliament on its Covid-19 interventions.
The province will on Thursday have to appear before the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Portfolio Committee to outline their Coronavirus response plans. The province currently has the least number of positive cases compared to the rest of the country. It has 7 840 positive cases, 94 deaths and 4 515 recoveries.
In addition to their Covid-19 plans, the province's Cooperative Governance MEC is expected to explain the status of municipalities in the province - including those under administration - and how they are responding to the pandemic. Municipalities in the province have recently been flagged by the Auditor-General for lack of accountability.
In his latest Local Government Audit Outcomes, AG Kimi Makwetu painted a bleak picture of how municipalities in the Northern Cape are amongst those continuing to incur irregular expenditures and failing to improve their outcomes.
He outlined that only 20 of the country's 257 municipalities have been able to attain a clean audit. Thirteen of the 20 clean audits were in the Western Cape, two in Mpumalanga, one in Gauteng, one in Limpopo, one in Kwa-Zulu Natal, one in the Eastern Cape and one in the Northern Cape.
