The residents of Mangaung Metro Municipality, which includes Bloemfontein and Thaba Nchu in the Free State, are cautioned against making unnecessary fires.

The municipality's spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says the Fire Department has noted with concern that residents have been setting grass alight for purposes of cleaning an area or making fire breaks without a permit.

He explains that the Mangaung Metro's Fire and Rescue Services responded to a total of 26 fire incidents this past weekend. Khedama mentions that 18 of the incidents were grassfires, which started small. He says some of the fires were out of control, requiring a response and the commitment of considerable resources from all roleplayers. Khedama says that due to the strong winds, no open fires or flames are allowed in the veld. He also adds that work like welding and grinding near grass must also be avoided.

He further states, that “as typical late winter weather hits some parts of the country, including Mangaung, residents are urged to be cautious when using different appliances and other means such as open fires, paraffin, gas heaters, stoves, and fireplaces to keep warm and cook. Our reports over time have shown us that these machines are the sources of most domestic fires.”
