The North West coronavirus death toll has passed the 200-mark. In the last 24-hour cycle, 20 more Covid-19 patients have died.

The increase in the rate of fatalities in the province took the death toll to 214. The 20 confirmed deaths in the North West are part of 282 fatalities reported by the Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, on Tuesday night. Mkhize also announced that the country’s death toll now stands at 12 264 with the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases standing at 592 144.

The North West has recorded an increase of 155 new infections in the last 24 hours. This means that active Covid-19 cases in the province are now at 8,251 after 14,980 patients recovered from the virus, and 214 deaths were recorded from the 23,445 reported cases.

The North West MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, has conveyed his sincere condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and also sent his gratitude to healthcare workers in the province who treated the deceased.

Sambatha previously revealed Covid-19 related deaths are mainly attributed to, amongst others, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cardiac failure, and severe pancreatitis. This follows the sudden increase in the number of deaths in the province, which continues to increase.

OFM News previously reported that the department has spent over 53% of the R124 million Covid-19 budget in the last six months on different service providers.

Premier Job Mokgoro said the department spent R65 922 572 on more than 30 suppliers in the province, which supplied different items including masks, disposable overalls, and temperature scanners, among others, in the last six months since the national state of disaster was declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
