A 45-year-old man is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court in the North West for the alleged possession of counterfeit liquor estimated to the value of R380 000, amongst other alleged crimes.

He was arrested during an intelligence-driven police operation in Safari Gardens in Rustenburg earlier this week.

The police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says during the arrest a warrant to search his house was obtained and executed. He says that this lead to the discovery of various counterfeit liquor brands and falsified liquor labels. He says in addition a pistol and ammunition were also found in the house.

Mokgwabone explains that the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the police with R6000. He states that this followed his failure to explain the counterfeit alcohol during police questioning. He was subsequently arrested and the liquor was confiscated. He will face charges of the illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, the possession of counterfeit goods, and corruption.

The Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, commended the police and said the work to ensure that illegal firearms are removed from the wrong hands, which are often used to commit serious and violent crimes, will continue.
