#CoronavirusNW: Nightclub making waves─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:50 Thu, 20 Aug 2020
The owner of a popular nightclub in Jouberton near Klerksdorp in North West is in hot water for breaching lockdown regulations under the National State of Disaster Management Act.
Provincial police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, confirms to OFM News that the 54-year-old owner was slapped with a notice to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on 28 August 2020.
This after videos of more than 50 patrons attending a gig at the night club on Wednesday night were widely shared across numerous social media platforms. This drew a lot of criticism from concerned citizens who labelled the patrons captured in these videos as irresponsible and ignorant of Covid-19 ripple effects. Mokgwabone adds that the owner of the club may also elect to pay an admission of guilt fine of R2 000, payable on or before 7 September 2020.
The Jouberton night club fiasco comes as MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha ,recently raised concern with the outbreak of Covid-19 infections in Matlosana amongst other areas in the province.
His concern comes after the province experienced a rapid increase of Covid-19 cases in Matlosana, which is said to be amongst the main contributors with over 4 000 cases.
OFM News previously reported that the covid-19 death toll in the province has hit the 214-mark, after 20 more Covid-19 patients were confirmed on Tuesday night to have died.
Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, on Wednesday night announced that the North West’s active cases stand at 8 447 after 14 980 patients recovered from the virus, and 214 deaths were recorded from the 23 641 total reported cases.
