The Matlosana Local Municipality, which includes Klerksdorp in the North West, has weighed in on the Jouberton night club fiasco.

The municipality has cautioned residents to abide by the lockdown regulations amidst the surge of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The municipal Ntswaki Makgetha tells OFM News the municipality is disappointed with the owner of the night club for hosting an event that potentially could have allowed the spread of the virus.

This comes as over 214 patients died due to Covid-19 related complications with over 100 of the deaths recorded in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District, including Matlosana. The owner of the night club has since been charged for contravening the National State of Disaster Management Act and is set to appear in court on 28 August.

His charge follows after he allowed over 50 patrons inside the premises without even wearing masks as prescribed by the government to stem the spread of the virus. Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, said the owner of the club may also elect to pay an admission of guilt fine of R2000, payable on or before 7 September 2020.

This after videos of more than 50 patrons attending a gig at the night club on Wednesday night were widely shared across numerous social media platforms. This drew a lot of criticism from concerned citizens who labelled the patrons captured in these videos as irresponsible and ignorant of Covid-19 ripple effects.
