NW police investigating its members following rape incident─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:34 Mon, 24 Aug 2020
The South African Police Service (SAPS) members in North West are facing a departmental investigation after reportedly failing to properly handle a rape case of an 18-year-old girl in Kanana near Orkney.
Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, confirms that an investigation has been instituted against members in terms of the SAPS' disciplinary regulations.
He adds crimes against women and children are a national priority, and the police cannot afford that its members' negligence negatively impacts the case.
His statement comes as women and various civil rights movements have been calling on SAPS management to ensure police officers across the country get the proper training to handle rape cases.
Mokgwabone adds that reports suggest residents came across some evidence at the crime scene on Friday, which seems to have not have been picked up by police officers who attended the scene.
The police took the 18-year-old to the crisis centre at the Tshepong Hospital in Jouberton near Klerksdorp, where she received medical attention.
Mokgwabone says following this a case of rape was then later opened against the three men at the Kanana Police Station on Friday evening August 21, 2020.
Investigations into the matter continue.
