More schools vandalised in NW | News Article

More than 120 schools in the North West have been vandalised since the start of the national lockdown in March due to the coronavirus (Covid-19).

Education spokesperson, Elias Malindi, confirmed that 129 schools were vandalised, and 112 have so far been repaired. He says only 17 schools are yet to be repaired, but adds that contractors are already on-site at some of these schools.

It's not yet clear if this was a direct attack on phasing in more schools pupils in the province following a number of reported Covid-19 cases in schools across the province.

OFM News previously reported that three classrooms prepared for the phasing in of Grade 10 and 11 pupils were recently set alight at Ramaine-A-Phetlhu Secondary School in Mafikeng.

Also in June two men were arrested on suspicion of burglary at schools. The two suspects were arrested in Sunrise Park in Rustenburg following a series of school break-ins during the national lockdown.

Following their arrest, school items such as projectors, cell phones, and a notebook laptop were confiscated.
