NW medical team praised following unusual operation─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:42 Tue, 25 Aug 2020
North West Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, is singing the praises of a team of doctors and nurses that performed a rare procedure.
The team successfully delivered a 3.24 kg baby whose mother had an advanced abdominal pregnancy.
An advanced abdominal pregnancy (AAP) refers to a pregnancy that continues beyond 20 weeks' gestation with a fetus living, or showing signs of having once lived and developed, in the mother's abdominal cavity.
MEC Sambatha says the team of 4 doctors and 4 nurses from Christiana near Bloemhof performed a successful caesarean section to deliver the baby.
This was the first case of its kind seen in the province, and the 6th to be recorded in the country.
The mother and baby are said to be well and recovering.
"Under normal circumstances, the baby was supposed to have been in the womb but this time the baby was in the abdomen, which made it a very rare and complicated procedure," Sambatha adds.
“These breakthroughs in specialised services means that we are no longer forced to continuously send patients to Gauteng as we can now perform the majority of those services in our province. What is pleasing even more is seeing such specialised services and skills now being devolved to rural and farming areas," Sambatha further adds.
