The number of learners infected with Covid-19 at a school in Winburg in the Free State has increased.

This, as 11 more learners at Naledi Ya Botjhabela Secondary School has tested positive for the virus, bringing the number of learners infected at this school to 13.

The spokesperson for the Department of Education in the province, Howard Ndaba,  explained that the department tested 17 learners who were from the same class as the two learners who initially tested positive last week. He added that of the 17, the results came back positive for 11. Whereafter the department held a meeting with the relevant authorities where it was decided that the school will be temporarily closed until 1 September.

He further stated that the Department of Health is contemplating to meet with the parents of the infected learners to ensure that quarantine is possible, if not, the department will then assist in that regard in order to prevent further spread of the virus.

Last week, OFM News reported that two learners at the school tested positive. This led to parents demanding the closure of the school with immediate effect, in fear that their children might be at risk of contracting the virus.

However, Ndaba, at the time, made it clear that after consulting with the department of health there is no need to close the school as the learners who tested positive had been sent home a week before and those who were identified as contacts were instructed to self-isolate. He reassured learners, parents and teachers that the school is safe and that there is no need to panic. Ndaba also added that the school is cleaned on a daily basis.

He further urged learners and the community to comply with safety regulations to stop the spread of the virus.
