#GBV: Department condemns murder of Goedemoed officer | News Article

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services (JCS) has weighed in on the murder of a Free State Goedemoed correctional officer.

The 38-year-old female officer was allegedly killed by her 38-year-old husband following a heated argument.

The Deputy Minister for Justice and Correctional Services (JCS), Nkosi Phatehekile Holomisa, condemned the murder of the 38-year-old woman by her husband who is also a correctional officer at the Goedemoed Correctional Centre.

He says the department, along with law enforcement agencies, will ensure that justice is served and that similar incidents are prevented.

OFM News on Saturday reported that the Goedemoed prison warder's bruised body was discovered by police in the couple's bedroom at their home in the Eastern Cape with two battens lying next to her. Holomisa adds that the department is committed to combating the scourge of gender-based violence through various efforts and bills such as the Victim Support Services Bill.

Eastern Cape Police spokesperson, Moitheri Bojabotsheha, previously told OFM News that two battens which were allegedly used as weapons were found next to the victims' body.

The suspect is expected to appear before the  Aliwal North Magistrate's Court on Monday, 31 August 2020 on a charge of murder.

"We condemn the senseless killing of a defenceless 38-year-old female correctional official on 27 August 2020, allegedly at the hands of her husband, also a correctional official, both stationed at Goedemoed Correctional Centre, (near the border) of Aliwal North, in the Eastern Cape. On behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, we want to convey our condolences to the family and relatives of our colleague from Goedemoed Correctional Centre who was murdered in a senseless manner" Holomisa further adds.

He continues “Over the past few days, our country has been deeply traumatized by acts of extreme violence perpetrated by men against women and children. This incidence has greatly pained us and we urge correctional officials to participate in departmental Wellness Programmes when they are distressed".
