#CoronavirusNC: Party confident in relief fund investigations | News Article

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape has expressed confidence in the Special Investigating Unit's (SIU) probe into alleged corruption related to the Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Provincial Secretary, Deshi Ngxanga, says the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) made a commitment to fight corruption wherever it rears its ugly head. He says the party in the province remain steadfast to root out corruption in the province.

This week, ANC chairperson and Premier, Zamani Saul, released the province's Covid-19 procurement report and announced that the province has spent over R170 million in the past six months on Covid-19 related supplies. Saul also said his provincial government will add the additional expenditure incurred with this list which is set to form part of the external audit processes of the Auditor-General (AG).

OFM News on Friday reported that 175 companies scored millions of rands from procurement of goods and services needed for the Northern Cape government’s coronavirus (Covid-19) response.  Bronwyn Thomas-Abrahams, who is the spokesperson for Saul, said this list will be shared with the Presidency for further analysis. Thomas-Abrahams added that the millions of rands were spent on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), social relief, disinfection of public buildings and infrastructure works and repairs.

Meanwhile, it was recently announced that the SIU is probing just under 660 companies and contracts valued at over R5 billion, over corruption allegations regarding the procurement of goods and services during the coronavirus pandemic.
