Covid-19 funds and alleged irregular tenders will this week come under much scrutiny when the Auditor-General briefs the media on his latest report.

Kimi Makwetu is expected to release the country's Covid-19 relief funds audit on Wednesday. The report will come amidst growing concerns over the use of relief funds by the different provinces as well as how politicians allegedly enriching themselves and those with close ties to them.

OFM News recently reported on contracts with a combined value of R2.7 million in the Free State that were awarded to Motheko Projects and Marvel Deeds, owned by former Premier and now ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule sons.

It is alleged Tshepiso Magashule and his younger brother Thato benefited from the Free State Treasury to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amidst the coronavirus, as a result of their father's close relationship with the MEC for Finance.

Whilst the Free State Treasury Department has since defended the awarding of tenders to Magashule's sons, stating that the companies tendered just like any other company in the province and met the criteria, the news has been received with mixed reactions by social media users and opposition parties - calling for investigations.

The Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, meanwhile over the weekend released a media statement distancing himself from allegations that his close allies have benefited from Covid-19 funds in the province.

Whilst allegations involving the misuse of these funds and tenders awarded to high ranking politicians (including those in the Presidency's office) have been refuted by many, the report by the AG is expected to shed light on how these funds have been used since the start of the lockdown period.
