NW public transport to be scrutinised─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:23 Thu, 03 Sep 2020
The North West public transport industry is set to be subjected to public scrutiny.
This, as the provincial government is to institute a public transport intervention team to deal with the challenges faced by the industry.
Public transport in the province has recently faced problems, including taxi violence, disputes involving routes, illegal operations, and licensing issues.
The Intervention Team chairperson, France Vilakazi, explains that the team was established to find the root causes of these challenges and provide solutions.
He says the team has prioritised hot-spots such as Orkney, Mamusa, Rustenburg, Brits, Ganyesa and Schweizer-Reneke.
Vilakazi adds that a plan of action to deal with these challenges is being finalised by the team and will be sent to the Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Sello Lehari.
“We will be having various engagements with industry roleplayers, consulting them, and trying to work out all the issues that are challenging them - to be ready for state assistance as the country has adopted the system.”
The team consists of Vilakazi; the former Social Development MEC, Fenny Gaolaolwe; former Mayor of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, Louis Diremelo and former Mayor of Moses Kotane Local Municipality, Peter Molelekeng, among the twelve members.
