A celebrated and revered Bloemfontein-based general and sports medical practitioner has died following his weeks-long battle against the novel coronavirus.

Enver Katzen, the general practitioner, whose practice was run from Heidedal for many years, is reported to have died from coronavirus complications on Wednesday after spending weeks receiving treatment in a hospital located in the Free State capital.

Whilst Katzen was not a native of Bloemfontein, his impact on the Free State medical fraternity and in Heidedal specifically has been immense. Tributes attesting to this, have been pouring in on social media, following information that he had passed on, with many thanking him for his contributions to society.

Katzen, who was born in Middelburg and finished off his schooling at Uitenhage High School in 1979, received his medical training at the prestigious University of Stellenbosch. He is reported to have received further training in sports medicine at the University of Pretoria.

He occupied the sports doctor position for the Free State under/19 and 21 teams, as well as the Free State Vodacom team.

He also sat on the organising committee of the 2003 Cricket World Cup that took place on the African continent for the first time.
