The Free State continues to be rocked by murders of women and children, mere weeks after the country commemorated Women’s Month - with intentions to highlight the scourge of Gender-Based Violence.

In the latest, a 62-year-old man was nabbed by police in Kopanong for the double murder of women in Chris Hani informal settlement in Bloemfontein.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the bodies of two women, aged 50 and 56, were found with stab wounds to their necks. Makhele adds that it is suspected that the incident happened between Friday and Saturday morning, as both victims were last seen on Friday.

Makhele further adds that the 62-year-old man who is now in custody for the murders will soon appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate court on two counts of murder.

"The preliminary investigation led to the arrest of the 62-year-old male, who is the owner of the house. Police investigations are underway to establish what led to the gruesome murder,” Makhele adds.

The murders of these women come after the death of nine-year-old Boipelo Mesi, who was reported missing over a week ago and was later found inside a shack not far from her home in Kroonstad on Saturday.

Meanwhile, OFM News on Monday reported that the police in the Free State are asking for assistance in finding a suspect after a woman’s body was found dumped in a field in Kalkuil at Odendaalsrus on Sunday.

Makhele told OFM News that the body of the 41-year-old Nolisizwe Mdladlamde had a gunshot wound to the head and her two cellphones were also found on the scene. He explains that according to preliminary investigations, Mdladlamde allegedly went drinking with her boyfriend and his friend on Saturday night.
