'Public not to share unverified trafficking incidents' | News Article

The Free State police urge the public to report suspected human trafficking to authorities before posting and sharing such information on social media platforms.

Provincial police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, tells OFM News simply sharing such cases on social media doesn’t serve any tangible purpose. He says furthermore, the police’s cybercrime unit has been diligently following up on the latest human trafficking allegations that have gone viral on social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter, and have determined that the allegations are not only false but were also spread on the same platforms in 2017.

Makhele cautions the public that police make use of their resources when following up on some of these viral posts, only to find out that they are false. He says people should exercise caution when sharing information on their social media pages because some of it is indeed misinformation.

This as OFM News has reported that calls are mounting for increased police visibility in Free State communities. Parents and guardians of Brebner High School learners in Bloemfontein have been urged to be vigilant, and educate themselves and their children on the dangers of kidnapping following an attempted kidnapping incident near the school earlier this week. The Free State Education Department has confirmed such an incident, whilst local police told OFM News on Thursday that, at that stage, no such case was reported to the police.

It has also been rumoured that the teenager who was reported missing in Phomolong, Kroonstad, on Thursday was found on Friday in the presence of her older boyfriend unbeknownst to her family. OFM News has been reliably informed that this was indeed the case.
