The 74-year-old Sias Willemse, who was well-known for his contribution in the province as a farmer and a sports lover, was found murdered at his home on Tuesday. Police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, says Willemse was found with two shot wounds in his throat and some ties around his neck. She says a case of murder has been opened.

Botma says Willemse’s safe was found open, but hunting rifles were still in the safe. She says they are at this stage unsure what is missing in his home and cannot confirm if any weapons are missing.

Condolences are already pouring in for the Willemse family. Residents in Potchefstroom and neighbouring towns have taken to Facebook to express their heartfelt condolences and raise concerns over the lack of safety in the province.

News about Willemse's death came just a day after Police Minister Bheki Cele addressed the media over crimes that have been committed since the lockdown period.

Whilst Cele put great emphasis on femicide and crimes against women and children, he confirmed that the escalating number of farm attacks and murders in the country is a major concern.
