NC Cogta director in hot water | News Article

The Director of the Northern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is in hot water following a raid by the Hawks at the department's offices on Wednesday.

The Hawks provincial spokesperson, Nomanthandazo Mnisi, says the unit is investigating the director of the department and her daughter after she failed to declare their relationship when the daughter applied for a departmental tender in 2019.

She says the daughter was amongst three companies which applied for a tender worth R250 000 - and during the process the departmental director illegally approved a quotation of R20 000 to her daughter.

Mnisi says, as a result, a complaint was brought to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation but adds that no-one has been arrested at this stage, following the raid.

"A search and seizure operation was conducted at the department where the relevant documents were seized for further investigations," she adds.

The woman is amongst many government officials in the country who failed to declare their interests to the relevant executive authorities.

In June 2020, the Public Service Commissioner, Henk Boshoff, who was acting on behalf of the Free State and Northern Cape at the time, told OFM News only one senior government official at management level in the province did not disclose their financial interests to the provincial executive ahead of the 30 April deadline. This left the Northern Cape with a 99,5% disclosure rate.

This year, the province has had numerous arrests of government officials who are being linked to fraud and corruption in that province. In July the Hawks nabbed 10 people - including officials of Northern Cape Department of Health - over an alleged R74 million tender fraud. This included the 51-year-old former Chief Executive Officer from the Department of Health, Gordon Moncho, and his daughter, the 28-year-old Naledi Moncho.
