FS police officials in dock for business robbery─── 09:00 Sat, 26 Sep 2020
Eight police officers appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court in the Free State on charges of business robbery, defeating the ends of justice and perjury.
Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the group appeared in court on Friday but will remain in custody until 1 October when they will apply for bail.
OFM News previously reported that the police officers were arrested on Tuesday by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for their alleged involvement in a business robbery committed at a supermarket in Kroonstad in June this year.
Makhele further adds two of the police officers is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Monday 28 September on a separate charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
He says the suspects allegedly conducted an operation at a shop in Station Street, Kroonstad, where they arrested the owner and his wife for contravention of the Disaster Management Act. It was alleged that the couple were selling cigarettes during the lockdown. A large amount of money and cigarettes were confiscated.
Makhele further states the couple was later released and their money and cigarettes were handed back to them. It was then when it emerged that the amount handed back was not the same as what was confiscated.
