The Northern Cape MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, has expressed shock following the fatal shooting of a patient at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.

Lekwene describes the incident as a brutal and unprecedented attack to have taken place in one of Northern Cape’s health facilities.

Police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, says it is alleged that four suspects entered the hospital disguised in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)  and shot the patient in his hospital bed.

Gamieldien says it is also alleged that other patients in the ward were robbed of their cell phones.

She further adds the patient who was shot and killed had recently been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he had been admitted with gunshot wounds.

The motive of the shooting is unknown and the investigation continues.

Gamieldien says no other patients in the ward was injured during the incident and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Furthermore, Lekwene says the department condemns any form of crime, especially where human life is taken. He adds that he trusts that police and all law enforcement agencies involved in this case will speedily bring the perpetrators to justice.
