NC school without electricity | News Article

The Steinkopf High School in the Namaqualand district in the Northern Cape has been unable to settle its outstanding account with Eskom which resulted in electricity being cut off at the school.

This is according to the Department of Education.

The school has for months not been fully operational with learners in the hostel worst affected by the lack of electricity. Departmental spokesperson, Geoffrey Van Der Merwe, in response to OFM News' inquiry, however, says the department is aware of the unfortunate situation of Steinkopf High School and that the district office has been engaging the school to address the financial situation experienced at the school.

Meanwhile, learners at this school had to find alternative accommodation with many of the Grade 12s housed by community members.

Van Der Merwe confirms this situation has severely affected learners accommodated in the hostel from the surrounding towns.

"The Steinkopf High School is one of the many schools that the department bails out every year in terms of their arrears with Eskom. The department is busy processing the financial aid to Steinkopf High School, whilst we have requested our district office to investigate the school finances to find a sustainable solution" he highlighted.
