The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will kickstart its registration week for the upcoming November Municipal by-elections this weekend.

At least four by-elections will be held in the Free State amidst the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

IEC provincial spokesperson, Itumeleng Liba, says two will take place in Botshabelo in the Mangaung Metro Municipality, one in Zastron’s Mohokare Municipality, and another in Hennenman in the Matjhabeng municipality on November 11. The elections in Botshabelo and Mohokare follow in the wake of ANC councillors’ deaths, while the one in Matjhabeng is the result of a local councillor’s resignation.

Liba earlier explained that the IEC in the province is aware of the current conditions related to the Covid-19 pandemic and all regulations regarding social distance will be respected.

Two ANC councillors, Ramakatsa Mohlabane and Ntenne Ratsiu from Botshabelo, died in August. Two wards, which include ward 33 and 28 in Botshabelo, will be up for grabs following the deaths of these councillors. Ratsiu, who was ward 28's councillor, died on 21 August - two days before the death of his colleague Mohlabane.
