#FSAsbestosGate: DA slams bail granted to accused | News Article

The Democratic Alliance in the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) has slammed the release of seven suspects in the controversial R255 million Free State asbestos corruption case.

DA member of the council, Mokgadi Kganakga, says it's a shame that these suspects - including former Mangaung mayor and MEC for Human Settlements, Olly Mlamleli, businessman Edwin Sodi, and former head of the department Nthimotse Mokhesi and four others, were granted bail.

She says the court needs to show no remorse to people who have taken food from the mouths of the poor. She continues to slam the former mayor for her alleged role in the multimillion-rand fraud, corruption and money laundering case.

She says DA members of the Provincial Legislature Roy Jankielsohn and Leona Kleynhans have for years kept the story alive. "If the courts do not do what they are supposed to do, the DA in the Free State Legislature will continue to pursue this case up until justice is served," she adds.

Kleynhans previously said that in their court action in July 2015, the party tried to stop payments on the asbestos contract, and Mlamleli assured the court that she would ensure that no payments would be made until the judge had ruled on the urgency of the matter.

Mlamleli and her co-accused were granted bail between R50 000 and R500 000 in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

The state prosecutor, Johan de Nysschen, on Friday told Magistrate Mxolisi Saliwa that at least another two to three suspects are expected to be nabbed in relation to the case.

Furthermore, the Bloemfontein High Court on Friday granted the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) an asset freezing order worth R300 million in connection with the asbestos housing project.
