Low turnout at Free State IEC stations─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:29 Sun, 04 Oct 2020
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Saturday - its first day of municipal by-election registration - recorded a low turnout at its 29 stations in the Free State.
IEC spokesperson, Itumeleng Liba, tells OFM News that the turnout for registration did not constitute even 5% of what they had expected.
Two by-elections are set to take place in Botshabelo in the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM), one in Zastron’s Mohokare Municipality, and another in Hennenman in the Matjhabeng municipality on November 11.
Despite the low turnout, Liba says the stations were opened on time and no issues were reported.
Meanwhile, today marks the last day of registration - it's not yet clear if the IEC will have another registration period ahead of the elections.
The elections in Botshabelo and Mohokare follow in the wake of ANC councillors’ deaths, while the one in Matjhabeng is the result of a local councillor’s resignation.
