Opposition reacts to #FSAsbestosGate─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:26 Sun, 04 Oct 2020
The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Free State have welcomed the large bail amounts set for the seven accused in the R255 million asbestos fraud, corruption and money laundering case.
FF+ Member of Parliament (MP), Wouter Wessels, says his party believes the high bail is justified, and further adds that they welcome the seizure of the accused's (including businessman Edwin Sodi, Nthimotse Mokhesi, Thabane Zulu, Olly Mlamleli and three others’) assets to the tune of R300 million.
Wessels also says that he believes this is only the beginning - and more arrests should follow for justice to prevail.
Meanwhile, the EFF chief whip at the Mangaung Metro Municipal (MMM) Council, Paballo Poone, echoes many people's sentiments that there should be more arrests.
She says the latest action by the Hawks, Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) would regain their public confidence and trust.
"We also thought that the Hawks, NPA are captured and that they are useless because for the longest time they could not make arrests and do their jobs properly," Poone adds.
Meanwhile, Wessels adds that the FF Plus welcomes the arrests and that the law is going its course with regards to alleged corruption.
Businessman Sodi, former HOD of the Free State’s Human Settlements Mokhesi, former national Human Settlements director-general Zulu, former MEC of Human Settlements Mlamleli and 3 others were granted bail on Friday.
The accused were released on bail between R50 000 and R500 000 in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court.
The state prosecutor, Johan de Nysschen, on Friday told Magistrate Mxolisi Saliwa that at least two to three more suspects are expected to be nabbed in relation to the case.
Furthermore, the Bloemfontein High Court yesterday granted the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) an asset freezing order worth R300 million in connection with the controversial 2013/14 asbestos housing project.
