Cele calls for arrests following FS #FarmMurder protests─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:23 Wed, 07 Oct 2020
Police Minister Bheki Cele has condemned the actions of protesters who gathered outside the Senekal Magistrate’s Court demanding justice for slain 21-year-old farm manager, Brendin Horner.
This, after a demonstration by a group outside the court resulted in arson and vandalism. Following a brief court appearance of two murder suspects - Sekwetje Isaiah Mahlamba (32) and Sekola Piet Matlaletsa (44) - approximately 100 demonstrators, among them armed individuals, reportedly stormed into the court building, demanding the suspects to be handed over.
They thereafter allegedly overturned a police van and set it alight.
Horner was found tied to a pole in an open space situated at the De Rots farm last week.
The police ministry confirms Cele has learnt with shock and disgust about the actions of the protesters, stating that this violent act resulted in the vandalism of court property and a police vehicle.
“While we all condemn the gruesome killing of this young man in Paul Roux, absolutely no-one has the right to take the law into their own hands - no matter what the situation is. This type of lawlessness can't be justified nor taken lightly," said Cele in a statement.
Whilst the police had to use teargas to disperse the group, OFM News meanwhile reported that the case against the two suspects has been postponed - with the pair expected to appear in the Paul Roux Magistrate's Court on October 16.
