Don't confuse criminality with politics - Cope | News Article

The political party, the Congress of the People (Cope), is adamant that former Free State Premier and now ANC Secretary-General (SG), Ace Magashule, should face the full might of the law.

This follows his links to the alleged massive fraud and corruption in the province, including the controversial R244 million Estina Dairy project, amongst others.

Cope National spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, says criminality must not be confused with the politics. His statement follows rife media speculations on Tuesday night that a warrant of arrest is ready to be issued to Magashule on the Estina Dairy project matter where millions of rands were squandered through means of corruption. Bloem says Magashule must tell the country what happened to the millions of rands of the Vrede Estina Dairy Project and many other cases of corruption that allegedly took place under his leadership.

At least two government officials have been nabbed by the Hawks over the failed Vrede project. The arrested suspects include a 55-year-old sole director of Rekgonne Community Projects, a company which entered into an agreement with the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2014 to implement all projects on behalf of the department for a period of two years, and the department's 49-year-old former Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

"It doesn't matter how long it will take for the Hawks and the NPA to act and arrest Magashule and all those who have destroyed the lives of millions of people of the Free State, we are definitely sure that they will go to prison for a very long time. The people of the Free State cannot wait to see Ace sitting in front of a judge and answering all the damning evidence that his once right-hand man Mxolisi Dukwana presented to the Zondo Commission. All the empty noises from one of the factions in the ANC claiming that the arrests are politically motivated, is just pure hogwash, thinking they will intimidate the NPA and Hawks not to do their job," Bloem adds.

On Friday, former Mangaung Metro Municipal Mayor and Former MEC for Human Settlements in the province Olly Mlamleli and her six co-accused appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court for bail application. This followed their arrests by the Hawks over the R255 million asbestos project.

She is the first senior ANC official in the province to be nabbed over fraud, corruption, and money laundering.

Mlamleli and six others are out on bail ranging from R50 000 to R500 0000.

The Bloemfontein High Court earlier granted the NPA Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) an asset freezing order worth R300 million in connection with the asbestos housing project. The case has been postponed to 11 November 2020, when it is expected to be transferred to the Free State High Court for trial.
