ANCYL calls Mashinini to action following #Senekal protest | News Article

Calls are mounting for the police to make more arrests in connection with the violent protests that ensued at the Senekal Magistrate's Court earlier this week.

The ANC Youth League in the Free State have weighed in on the matter calling it a blatant disregard of the law.

The youth structure is calling on the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Sam Mashinini to ensure that those involved are arrested and charged with treason.

ANCYL Free State Provincial Spokesperson, Sello Pietersen, in a statement says there is inconsistency in the manner in which black and white people are treated by the police, and further calls on Mashinini to address this.

OFM News previously reported that more arrests are expected in connection with the protests after a 52-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday.

The protests outside the Senekal Magistrate's Court on Tuesday saw approximately a hundred demonstrators, among them armed individuals, allegedly storming into the court building demanding two suspects arrested for the murder of farm manager, Brendin Horner, be handed over to them.

Following a brief court appearance of the two suspects - Sekwetje Isaiah Mahlamba (32) and Sekola Piet Matlaletsa (44) - the protesting group allegedly fired gunshots, overturned a police van, and set it alight.

The case against the two murder suspects has meanwhile been postponed to next week Friday to allow them to apply for bail.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, earlier confirmed to OFM News that the case against the pair will be transferred from the Senekal Magistrate's Court to Paul Roux.
