NC municipality makes payment to Eskom─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:50 Fri, 09 Oct 2020
Eskom has restored electricity supply to the Northern Cape's Emthanjeni Municipality.
This, after the municipality finally made a payment to the power supplier.
OFM News earlier reported that residents of this municipality along with those from the Tsantsabane Local Municipality had to brace themselves for power outages due to non-payment for bulk electricity supply.
The power utility’s spokesperson, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, said the two municipalities had on several occasions failed to adhere to their payment conditions, leading Eskom to impose electricity supply restrictions in efforts to recoup the money they are owed.
She confirmed the Tsantsabane Municipality owes more than R150 million while the Emthanjeni Municipality, which serves the communities of Britstown, De Aar, and Hanover, owed more than R90 million.
The utility says while they acknowledge Emthanjeni's payment and commitment to pay for its services, it warns that failure to do so will leave Eskom with no choice but to restrict its services.
Emthanjeni's payment came just a day after electricity supply to the Kamiesberg and Richtersveld Local Municipalities was restored on Wednesday, after the municipalities both paid an acceptable portion of their electricity debt.
OFM News has previously also reported on how the Auditor-General expressed concern over the state of municipalities in the province, indicating in a report that only one municipality in this province managed to produce a clean audit for the 2018/19 Local Government Audit Outcomes.
