Sassa card fraud suspects in FS court | News Article

Four suspects, including a suspended police officer, is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in the Free State on Friday for alleged corruption and extortion.

According to the provincial Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, the group’s court appearance follows after a Post Office manager in Virginia was reportedly approached by one of the employees – who was part of the group – to load 250 South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards with grant money.

She says they, in turn, promised to pay the manager R20 000.

Authorities were informed and the suspects – aged between 32 and 62 years old - were arrested on Wednesday following a sting operation by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

Steyn explains that the suspects include a former police officer who is on suspension for previous infringements, a cleaner at the post office, as well as two civilians.

Furthermore, two vehicles belonging to the suspects have also been confiscated during the sting operation.
