#CosatuNationalStrike: Union awaiting government’s response | News Article

The Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) in the Free State has spoken out this week and is now awaiting the government’s response.

This, as Cosatu participated in a national strike along with unions such as the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru).

Cosatu’s provincial secretary, Monyatso Mahlatsi, says the union held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the way forward after premier Sisi Ntombela accepted its list of demands.

Mahlatsi says the union made the decision to wait 14 days to see if the government will respond to the memorandum it received during the national strike on Wednesday. He says only thereafter will the union take another form of action.

Mahlatsi previously told OFM News that the union is preparing for a public service strike following problems pertaining to public servants’ salaries. He said, however, it has not yet been determined when the strike will take place.

This followed after the unions marched in solidarity to the premier’s office in Bloemfontein and handed over a list of demands. These demands included calls for Ntombela to act against individuals against who there are allegations of corruption, as well as the increase in gender-based violence in the province.
