Bullets fly during cash-in-transit robbery | News Article

A suspected robber was killed and five police officers and two security guards were left injured during a botched cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Rustenburg.

The police’s Brenda Muridili says five members from the Rustenburg Flying Squad and K9 Unit, as well as two Fidelity security guards, are being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds following the incident which left one suspect fatally wounded.

She says police officers were patrolling and following up on information received about a CIT robbery that was to take place in Rustenburg, Geelhoutpark. The suspects fired shots at police shortly after they arrived on the scene.

Muridili says police retaliated and an unknown number of suspects then got into their getaway vehicles and fled the scene.

“The police gave chase up until the Tlhabane Shopping Centre where another shootout ensued, resulting in five members sustaining gunshot wounds while one suspect was fatally wounded. At the scene of the robbery, two security guards were also injured during the shootout. All the injured have been taken to hospital for medical attention,” adds Muridili.

The police’s National Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, has applauded the South African Police Service (SAPS) members and the injured security guards, and wished them a speedy recovery.

“We are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or to send tip-offs on MySAPS App,” says Muridili.
