Interdict issued against striking NC municipal workers | News Article

The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality in the Northern Cape has obtained an interdict prohibiting municipal workers from protesting after they downed tools last week Tuesday.

The Executive Mayor of the municipality, Patrick Mabilo, says the strike by workers affiliated with the South African Workers’ Union (Samwu), has been deemed as illegal. He says, according to information, workers are opposing the interdict and have continued striking on Monday. Mabilo says, as a result, service delivery has been put to a halt since last week.

He explains that workers have handed over a list of demands voicing their reasons for protesting. Mabilo reveals that the list of demands includes overtime pay, a salary increase of 6,25%, the permanent employment of temporary employees and employees on contract, as well as allegations of corruption against a certain official.

He says the municipality will be meeting with union representatives on Tuesday to try and resolve the matter.

Mabilo further adds that the municipality is working around the clock to ensure that service delivery is restored and apologises for the inconvenience caused by the strike.
