#CoronavirusFS: Bfn police fined many at street party - WATCH | News Article

Police in the Free State issued many fines following chaotic scenes at a street party where people failed to follow Covid-19 regulations this past weekend in Second Avenue, Bloemfontein.

This adds some background to a video doing the rounds on social media of hundreds of people not adhering to social distancing, the wearing of masks or the 12pm curfew.

The police tell OFM News that any of the 20 people who were fined should treat the matter like an arrest. The public is now warned as they are currently under the police’s raidar and failure to follow Covid-19 regulations is seen as unlawful.

‘’Everything we do must comply with the Disaster Management Act, however, in general people must understand that not wearing a mask is an offence and you are actually risking the lives of the public."

The police add that business owners should be strict when allowing anyone to enter their places of business. If anyone is found without a mask, the owner risks getting a fine as well as the possible closure of the business.

Police also say that they have seen a trend as to when business owners attempt to control the number of people at their business, the public gather outside in large groups. This, according to the police, is seen as public drinking which is against the regulations of the Liquor Act.

The police concluded that they’re very disappointed with the behaviour of the public which also contributed to five accidents and incidents whereafter culpable homicides were reported.
