Former NW official remanded in custody | News Article

The former North West Municipal Manager (MM) of ailing Ratlou Local Municipality has been remanded in custody in the Atamelang Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The 45-year old Cassius Sebatane Sejake on Monday appeared in court after he was arrested by the Hawks on Monday morning.

Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, previously told OFM News that Sejake was nabbed for allegedly failing to follow tender processes in the awarding of tenders of approximately R5.8 million, between 2018 and 2019. Sejake is being charged for the fruitless and wasteful expenditure of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). Rikhotso says according to information the service providers were allegedly appointed without a competitive bidding process when Sejake failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that public procurement processes were followed and observed. Meanwhile, his case has been postponed to 20 October 2020 for a formal bail application.

In 2019, the municipal administrator attributed the municipality’s troubles to non-compliance with supply chain management prescripts, non-expenditure of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant, and escalating unauthorised, irregular, and fruitless expenditure, amongst other issues.

Previously OFM News' Joba Matsheng reported about the unhappiness of employees with Sejake. Matsheng’s report indicated that workers downed tools in protest against Sejake.
