NW municipality condemns vandalism | News Article

The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has strongly condemned incidents of vandalism by workers whom they allege are members of the South Africa Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU).

The municipality has indicated their disappointment regarding a protest that took place yesterday were members are said to have burnt tyres, threw rubbish around town and vandalised the building.

Municipal spokesperson, Ntswaki Makhetha, says the municipality acknowledges that workers have the right to voice their frustrations, however, the management urges all role players to do it peacefully and amicably.

OFM News spoke to SAMWU North West secretary, Vincent Diphoko, who says the protest is due to danger allowances and Covid-19 compensation.

Meanwhile, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh told OFM News that no cases were opened in relation to the protests and that no arrests were made.

Both the management of the municipality and the union held a meeting today to resolved the matter. Diphoko said they will have an update after the meeting as the municipality is not willing to give in to the workers demands.
