FS matric learner faces suspension amidst exams | News Article

The Free State Education Department confirms a learner at the Mophate Secondary School in Bothaville has been suspended after dousing a teacher with mud.

The grade 12 learner has been suspended for five days as a result of the incident. Departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, says the learner will appear before the school’s disciplinary committee tomorrow to account for his ill behaviour. He reiterates the department takes a ‘dim view of this incident and condemn it in the strongest possible term’.  Ndaba says psycho-social support will be provided to learners and teachers who witnessed the incident and investigations into it are underway.

News over the suspended learner comes just a day before Education MEC Tate Makgoe leads a pledge signing ceremony where hundreds of grade 12 learners will be expected to sign a pledge committing themselves to abide by the examination regulations when writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC).

The department confirms Makgoe will lead the ceremony at the St Bernard Secondary School on Friday.

Over 29 000 grade 12 learners across the province will sit for the 2020 NSC exams and are expected to sign the pledge in their respective schools.

Meanwhile, Makgoe has in a statement regarding the incident in Bothaville highlighted that “we frown upon any form of violence in our schools and we call on our learners to maintain high level of discipline and respect for their teachers.”
