Former Free State Premier and the current ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule's corruption allegations will this week once again come under public scrutiny.

This, as a criminal case against his former driver and close ally, is expected to resume in the Bloemfontein High Court.

The 42-year-old Ricardo Mettler stands accused of stealing a Pierneef painting valued at R8 million.

He is said to have received it as a goodbye-gift when Magashule took up the ANC Secretary-General position at Luthuli House.

Magashule has since the beginning of the month made headlines with many stating that there is an imminent warrant of arrest coming his way following arrests by the Hawks in the much-publicised asbestos removal case.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation so far arrested seven suspects including high-rank government officials for the R255 million asbestos deal in the Free State.

The deal, which was to see the audit, assessment, and removal of asbestos roofs in the province, has to date not yielded any results despite the province having coughed up millions as far back as 2014.

During the ANC's public engagements in Ekurhuleni this past weekend, Magashule, however, told a group of journalists that he is innocent and is not scared of the Hawks.

He rubbished corruption allegations against him, stating that some of his critics are nothing but "bitter".
