Letsemeng's acting mayor resigns | News Article

The embattled mayor of the Letsemeng Local Municipality, which includes Koffiefontein in the Free State, has tendered his resignation amidst pressure from irate residents.

Sello Bahumi tells OFM News that he tendered his resignation this past Friday.

He says his sudden resignation comes as he intends on quitting politics and to focus on his private life. Residents of Petrusburg and Koffiefontein have been vocal and protesting against Bahumi who they accused of being awol in most cases and failing to attend to service delivery issues, which include water issues and the creation of jobs.

Bahumi, however, says the pressure and accusations levelled against politicians - be it in municipalities or government entities - have far-reaching implications and are at times unfair because politicians always carry the blame on behalf of others.

"I called a council meeting whereby I formally tendered my resignation," and Friday two weeks ago, I had a discussion with the ANC," he adds. Bahumi further tells OFM News he is always stressed out and this is affecting his health. "Politics are hard and they are always frustrating. I had to resign," Bahumi adds.

In September, irate residents of Bolokanang in Petrusburg took to the streets while calling for the immediate resignation of Bahumi over service delivery issues.

The community leader, Kevin Lehlohonolo Banda, told OFM News that residents have, amongst others, been forced to endure raw sewage and waste refuse that has allegedly not been collected for over two months, amongst others.

For months residents have been trying to get answers from Bahumi but their efforts have not yielded any results. Banda said what was exacerbating the matter around the area is the high rate of youth unemployment and the lack of infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, OFM News previously reported on the wave of protests which rocked this municipality from 2018 to 2019 when irate residents of Koffiefontein went on the rampage and called for the resignation of former mayor, Thandiwe Reachable.
