Free State residents have been urged to be cautious and to take heed of precautionary measures during thunderstorms.

This, as the South African Weather Services issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for western and central KZN, the eastern Free State and the southern Highveld of Mpumalanga for the next three days.

Residents in these provinces have further been warned against hail, strong winds, and heavy rain which could lead to flooding of susceptible roads.

The Mangaung Metro Municipality says not much damage occurred on Monday as a result of thunderstorms, but appeals to all of its residents to keep safe.

Spokesperson Qondile Khedama has urged residents to stay away from open bodies of water, among other safety measures.

He, in a statement, adds the city’s Fire and Emergency Services Unit is ready for any eventuality and has compiled tips that members of the community can use to stay safe during this period - when lightning strikes may occur.

These include staying indoors and away from windows, avoid standing under trees or being in contact with metal, among others.
