#CoronavirusNW: Concerns about resurgence | News Article

The North West Department of Health is concerned with the increase in Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in some areas in the province.

Departmental spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says at least two local municipalities in the province - Mahikeng and Tswaing - are experiencing a resurgence.

Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, earlier warned about a second wave of infections, and said the country recently saw a 10% increase in Covid-19 cases across the country.

Lekgethwane says the provincial department will intensify its message to residents not to let their guard down.

"It is important that people continue to adhere to preventative measures. The department will be rolling out a second wave preventative communication strategy. We are already starting with it, but as days go by we will be intensifying it," he adds.

He says the Matlosana Local Municipality, which includes Klerksdorp, and the Bojanala Municipality, have seen a daily decrease in the number of Covid-19 infections.

"If you look at our statistics you will see that the recovery rate in these areas has also increased - only Matlosana is still an issue. But those areas which were previously declared hotspots - their recovery rate is high and we don't see a lot of new infections in those areas," he further adds.

Lekgethwane says the department is continuing with its screening and testing programmes. The North West has had over 430 fatalities, more than 30 000 cumulative cases, and a total of over 28 000 recoveries.

About 19 000 patients have died across the country due to Covid-19 related complications.
