NW residents face power outages | News Article

Residents of Hartbeesfontein, Klerksdorp, Orkney, Jouberton and Stilfontein in the Matlosana Local Municipality in North West have been warned about a scheduled power outage in these areas from November 12.

This, as Eskom plans to restrict electricity supply to the municipality due to non-payment for its services.

The power utility confirms the municipality has on several occasions failed to adhere to their payment conditions and have now resorted to electricity supply restriction in efforts to recoup the money they are owed.

OFM News' Katleho Morapela reports daily interruption of bulk electricity supply will continue from 06h00 until 08h00 and increase gradually until the municipality presents a suitable payment plan to Eskom.

The warning by Eskom came amidst the National Council of Province's (NCOP) visit to the province to engage financially distressed municipalities.

Members of the NCOP from Tuesday heard how municipalities in the province are still grappling with service delivery due to financial mismanagement, lack of political leadership, and high vacancy rates amongst other issues. This coupled with the millions they lost through their investment with the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.

Eskom advised all consumers who would be adversely affected by the withholding of electricity supply services, to take all necessary precautions and to treat all electrical equipment as if it was live and dangerous in order to prevent injury and limit damages to their equipment, operations and businesses.
