Mashay Gamieldien, police spokesperson, adds that the accused was further declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name was recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO).

The incident took place in late 2018 when the victim, an 11-year-old girl, was by herself in her grandmother’s shack. The suspect entered the shack, pinned her down, covered her face with a blanket and raped her. When the victim's uncle entered the shack, the suspect fled through the back door. 

Van Rooy was arrested in the early hours of 29 December 2018. The accused is not related to the victim, Gamieldien added.
