Central South Africa will experience some much needed heavy rainfall this weekend.

Heyneke says a yellow warning has been issued due to the high probability of localised flooding in the Free State, Eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the southern part of North West.

She says whilst the rain is good news for the agriculture sector, it doesn’t bode so well for motorists travelling along busy national roads this weekend.

Heyneke says there will be increased traffic on the N1 and the N3 due to the reopening of schools next week. “We just want to advise the public to drive safely especially with reduced visibility,” says the Bloemfontein-based forecaster. She further cautions motorists to exercise patience on the roads and be careful of slippery roads.

Last week veld fires ravaged the Hertzogville and Hoopstad area, burning 100 000 hectares of land. General Manager of the Free State Umbrella Body for Fire Protection Associations, Johann Breytenbach, reported similar veld fires in the Northern Cape.

The Hertzogville fire is believed to have broken out during protests by local residents of the township over water issues, beginning on the R708 with the flames spreading quickly in the direction of Dealesville, Bultfontein, and Hoopstad due to the hot and windy conditions experienced then. It is reported that one farmer in Hertzogville lost approximately R900 000 in livestock and incurred R3 million in damage to property on his farm.
