Workers’ strike leaves Klerksdorp in a mess─── 10:35 Sat, 31 Oct 2020
The Klerksdorp central business district (CBD) and other suburbs around the Matlosana Municipality in North West have been badly affected by a municipal workers strike with refuse reportedly piling up on street corners.
Negotiations between the municipality management and the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) representatives were supposed to conclude by this past Wednesday, October 28.
Municipal spokesperson, Ntswaki Makhetha, said the municipality will make alternative plans to clean up the CBD, and asked residents to be patient during this difficult time.
Makhetha told OFM News that some workers are back at work.
SAMWU North West provincial secretary Vincent Diphoko said they will have clear direction on Monday.
"At this moment we are engaging with members on the way forward," said Diphoko.
Workers have been embarking on the strike since 19 October demanding danger allowance and Covid-19 compensation.
